This Proverb says, “As a ring of gold in a swine’s snout, so is a beautiful woman who lacks discretion.”
A person’s outward appearance does not necessarily correlate with their inward makeup or character. A person may be very attractive on the outside. However, they may be corrupt or ugly on the inside.
The Bible says God cares more about our inward character than our outward appearance to others. Jesus described the religious leaders of His day as ‘whitewashed tombs.’ Their outward appearance was impressive to the people. However, they were rotten to the core. Jesus said to them, “Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites. You are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. So you, too, outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.”
This Proverb describes a beautiful woman who lacks discretion. Lacking discretion indicates a moral flaw in a person’s character. Such a flaw can only be fixed through obedience to the Word of God.
If we live according to God’s Word our inward or appeal will increase. We may not be handsome or beautiful on the outside. However, we will be beautiful on the inside and attractive to God who knows us intimately.
