This Proverb says, “He who gathers in summer is a son who acts wisely, but he who sleeps in harvest is a son who acts shamefully.” This proverb tells us that we should be diligent to use times of abundance to prepare for times of famine. It is using food as an example where food is plentiful in the summer and scarce in the winter. The food gathered during summer will sustain a wise person during the winter.

However, the Proverb portrays another and more significant Truth. God has given us one life to live here on the Earth. It should be a time of preparation for our eternal destination. A wise person will spend their life trying to please God with his or her thoughts, words and deeds. A wise person will then prepare to deal properly with the events that will occur. Such a person will live by the Word of God for guidance and will be successful.

On the other hand, a person who is not wise will not use his or her lifetime of opportunities to prepare for their ultimate destination, Heaven or Hell. Such a person will not believe in God. Nor will they live their lives according to God’s Word.

They are like the foolish son who sleeps during the harvest and is unprepared for the trials of life. They will have no solid foundation that the Word of God provides. The Bible says that such a person will likely spend an eternity of misery and pain in Hell.

Therefore, we should be the like the wise son who gathers in summer. We should wisely use our time here on Earth and hope for an eternity in Heaven after we die.
