This Proverb says, “On the lips of the discerning, wisdom is found, but a rod is for the back of him who lacks understanding. Wise men store up knowledge, but with the mouth of the foolish, ruin is at hand.”

What does it mean to discern? To discern means to be able to see, recognize or understand something. In this Proverb, a discerning person is one who understands the Word of God, the Bible. With such understanding this person will be able to gain wisdom that will enable them to apply their understanding.

Wisdom can only be gained through belief in God and understanding the Word of God, the Bible. Therefore, those who don’t truly believe in God will not discern. The Bible characterizes non-believers as fools and says, “The fool has said in his heart, there is no God.” A fool cannot therefore gain proper guidance from God’s Word. A fool will only respond to physical punishment from authorities.

A wise person will also have a treasure chest of knowledge from God’s Word. This person is able to draw from this knowledge as the situation requires. However, a fool does not have such a reservoir of knowledge. This person can only speak and babble without understanding. Their words will ultimately lead them to ruin or destruction.

We should view God’s Word as a gift from God. His Word is a treasure that we should value and protect. If we treasure God’s Word and live according to His guidance we will have abundant life. More importantly, we will be granted entry into God’s Heavenly Kingdom after we die.
