In this daily Bible reading Jesus tells His disciples: “Whoever wishes to save his life shall lose it; but whoever loses his life for my sake and the Gospel’s shall save it.” I believe Jesus’ statement means that we should align our choices with what the Word of God requires of us.

For example, if we are having troubles in our marriage and encounter another person who is more appealing, we may be tempted to commit adultery. We may believe that it is our only opportunity to be fulfilled physically and emotionally. However, the Bible specifically forbids committing adultery.  Therefore, we must reject the path of momentary personal gratification.

A person who chooses to save or satisfy themselves by committing adultery may well lose their life spiritually. However, the person who remains faithful to their spouse and repairs their marriage will be saving their spiritual lives.

Also, saving their marriage will lead to a more fulfilled life then destroying their marriage. Destroying their marriage by committing adultery will likely destroy two families and lead to much pain and misery. Worse, it could lead to an eternity of pain and suffering in Hell.
