Zechariah 14:1 – 21

In this daily Bible reading Zechariah describes the final events in Jerusalem when Jesus returns to the Earth. Evidently, armies will attack Jerusalem and will be succeeding in overcoming the city. During this battle there will be a great earthquake which will split the Mount of Olives. This will create a large valley running east to west. The residents of Jerusalem will flee from the attacking armies through this valley. When this happens, Jesus and his army will descend to the Mount of Olives.

Jesus will then destroy the attacking armies as follows: “The Lord will strike all the people who have gone to war against Jerusalem: their flesh will rot while they stand on their feet; and their eyes will rot in their sockets.”  Israel’s enemies will be destroyed.

Jesus will then establish His Kingdom on the Earth. The Bible says that a river will flow out of Jerusalem through the valley caused by the great earthquake. The river will flow to both the Eastern and Western seas. The Bible also says that many fruit trees will grow beside the river, providing life-giving food to many. The days of destruction will be turned into days of peace and prosperity under Jesus’ rule. It will be a glorious time on the Earth.
