In this Psalm David mentions one of the benefits of trusting God in one’s life. David says, “Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him, the help of my countenance, and my God.” Our outward appearance to others can be influenced by our inward belief. As David says, our countenance or facial expression can reflect the kind of person we are.
However, we should not assess others by this means. The Bible says that Satan was one of God’s most beautiful creations. Therefore, Satan may have a very pleasant appearance.
Regarding facial appearance, a very bitter person’s facial expression can be quite unpleasant. As we get older, our facial expressions become more established. A careful observation of the population around us will validate this. Some people have pleasant expressions. Some do not.
Having a pleasant countenance is but one of the many benefits of believing in God and living according to God’s Word. With a pleasant appearance we have a better chance to be liked and trusted by others.
