This Proverb says, “If you have been foolish in exalting yourself, or if you have devised evil, put your hand over your mouth.” This Proverb indicates that we should not be prideful or try to justify our wrongdoings. If we speak with pride and arrogance or do something sinful we are causing harm to both ourselves and others. Trying to justify our wrongdoing will only cause more harm.
Therefore, when we realize that we have said something wrong we should just stop speaking. Our words are very powerful in regard to how they affect others. It is better to say nothing than to say something that will continue to hurt.
Our best course of action in such a situation is to simply and honestly say we are sorry and accept whatever consequences come our way. We should learn from that experience and strive to choose our words carefully in the future. I have heard it said that God gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason. We should do more listening than speaking.
The Bible says that we will be held accountable for the words that we speak. Therefore, we should choose those words carefully. Our goal should be to help others rather than to glorify ourselves. Having this mindset will guide us to choose the right words in various situations.
Fewer good words is far better than many thoughtless words. Those few good words will produce far better results for the other person and for ourselves.
