These Proverbs say the following: “The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child who gets his own way brings shame to his mother.” “Correct your son, and he will give you comfort. He will also delight your soul.” As parents we must sometimes correct or discipline our children for wrongdoing. Children begin life as naturally self-centered small people. They want their own way and will try to resist parental guidance. During these times parents must correct their children’s bad behavior. Sometimes that will require physical punishment or spanking.
BENEFITS OF CORPORAL PUNISHMENT
When I was a child in the 1950s, corporal punishment was common both at home and at school. Bad behavior was not tolerated. It was usually met with physical spankings. This proved to be a good deterrent to bad behavior, because the children wanted to avoid the pain of a spanking. The result of good parental discipline and guidance was well behaved and disciplined children who became successful and productive adults.
Unfortunately, we have moved away from corporal punishment. Parents changed their tactics from corporal punishment to trying to reason with young children. This was not very effective. Children defied their parents and had no real consequences for bad behavior. Unfortunately, this has produced generations of defiant and unruly children who became selfish and unproductive adults.
RESULT OF PERMISSIVENESS
Today we see many fragmented families and children who grow up without fathers. This has produced children who become defiant and rebellious. Many have turned to drugs. Unfortunately, this has destabilized our country with moral decadence. It has also produced leaders with destructive policies and sinful behavior.
The Bible indicates this decline will continue to total destruction. However, there is hope. The Bible also says that Jesus will return to restore order and will become King of the Earth. Society will be healed under his leadership. People will live lives that are healthy, stable and joyful.
