This Proverb says, “The poor man and the oppressor have this in common; The Lord gives light to the eyes of both.” The Word of God is light. It is available to all people. What is the light that the Lord gives? The Bible says that Jesus is the light of the world. The Bible also says that Jesus is the living Word of God. Therefore, the light that the Lord gives to all people is the Word of God, which we have in the form of the Bible.

The Bible is widely published and distributed, so it is virtually available to all people in the world. However, not all people will receive the light of God’s word. Some will reject it altogether.

The Bible speaks of poor people and wealthy people. God seems to favor the poor people because they are more receptive to God’s light. The wealthy people tend to be those who oppress the poor. They tend to reject God’s light and focus on their wealth and possessions.

Is it therefore bad to be wealthy? Not necessarily. However, being wealthy makes it more difficult to live by God’s light in His Word. In fact, the Bible says, “It is more difficult for a rich person to enter Heaven than for a camel to go through the eye of a needle.”

Therefore, if we become wealthy we should not set our heart on our wealth, and we should hold our wealth loosely. We should also be very generous, especially to the poor. We should be genuinely concerned about them and help them when we can. Most importantly, we should strive to acquire God’s light and live by His Word. In so doing we may remain on the pathway that leads to Heaven.
