This Proverb says, “A fool always loses his temper but a wise man holds it back.” The Bible characterizes a fool Is a person who does not believe in God. The Bible says, “A fool says in his heart there is no God.” Therefore, a fool is a person who lacks self-control.

The Bible says that when we believe in God and Jesus Christ we are given the fruits of the Holy Spirit. One of those fruits is self-control. When we believe, we are then able to control our temper. We are able to hold back our anger when we are wronged. When we control our temper we then diffuse a tense situation and prevent escalation of a conflict. We therefore promote peace which God favors. Jesus said in the sermon on the mount, “Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of God.”

I have found in my life that I am not effective when I am angry. My anger never produces good results, only bad. However, when I hold back my anger and promote peace, good things happen. This is especially true in a marital relationship. Sometimes it is difficult to diffuse a marital argument. However, it is always the right course to take.

Perhaps the most devastating results of losing one’s temper is saying damaging words to the other person. Thoughtless words can cause much damage, and the damage can last a lifetime. Such words are usually spoken when a person does not restrain their anger. However, if one controls their anger they will think before they speak. They will choose the words carefully so that they do not cause damage. This truly is the better approach to resolving any conflict.
