This Proverb says, “He who gives to the poor will never want, but he who shuts his eyes will have many curses.” We have most likely all encountered poor beggars on the street corners and elsewhere. How do we respond in such situations? Do we have compassion and want to help them? Or do we turn away, avoiding an encounter.
When Jesus was on the Earth He was compassionate and caring for the poor people. In many cases He helped them and cured them of their infirmities. Jesus was not cold and uncaring. He took time to help and nurture those in need.
Jesus was an example of how we should live our lives. We do not live in isolation, so how we treat others is very important. It matters to Jesus.
Jesus told the people, “Whatever you do to the least of these you also do to Me.” Jesus told the people who did not care for the poor, “Depart from Me, I never knew you.” It seems that Jesus will not allow those without compassion to enter his Kingdom.
I realize that it is not possible to give to all the poor people around us. However, it is possible to demonstrate compassion to those who God places before us. When I think about it, very few people actually ask for my help on a daily basis. I therefore view such encounters as opportunities to be compassionate and caring.
During such encounters I feel good about helping and knowing that God favors my compassion toward others. I find it to be a better way to approach life.
