This Proverb says, “Apply your heart to discipline, and your ears to words of knowledge.” Our lives here on Earth are quite short when compared to eternity. I believe that God has created each of us and given us a period of time to be shaped into people who will spend eternity with Him.
During our lives we will have many choices to make. We can choose a sinful path, or we can choose a path of righteousness. The sinful path is an easy path to choose because it appeals to our natural and sinful state. However, this path will lead us to misery and destruction. This path will lead us to an eternity in Hell.
The righteous path is a more difficult path to choose, as it is contrary to a person’s natural sinful desires. However, this path will lead to blessings and joy. More importantly it will lead us to an eternity in Heaven with God.
This Proverb indicates two essential elements in choosing the path of righteousness. If we want to follow the path of righteousness, we must ‘apply our hearts to discipline and our lives to words of knowledge.’ It takes self-discipline to reject sin and choose righteousness.
We must also adhere to words of knowledge that can only be found in the Word of God, the Bible. The Bible is essential to walking the path of righteousness. The Bible should become our daily companion as we live our lives, trying to stay on the path that leads to Heaven.
