This Proverb says, “The hearing ear and the seeing eye, the Lord has made both of them.” All people have eyes and ears with which to see and hear. However, this Proverb is speaking of perceiving rather than just physically seeing and hearing.

This Proverb can be applied to the Word of God, the Bible. Many people cannot understand the Bible. When they read it they have difficulty perceiving the truths that the Bible contains. For example, the Jews could not perceive that many prophecies in the Bible spoke about Jesus.

The Prophet Isaiah wrote, “Their ears are dull, and their eyes are dim, otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and return and be healed.” Reading the Bible is one thing. Understanding the Bible is quite another.

So then, how does one gain the ability to understand what they are reading? My personal experience was that I couldn’t understand the Bible until I believed it was true. When I believed the Bible to be true, I was then able to understand it.

The Bible characterizes Jesus as the ‘Living Word of God.’ He is therefore the embodiment of the Word of God, which we have in the Bible. Therefore, I think that our belief in Jesus is validated by how we view the Bible.
