This Proverb says, “The spirit of a man can endure his sickness, but a broken spirit who can bear?” When a person believes in God and lives life by the Word of God, God grants them His Holy Spirit. The Bible says that God’s Holy Spirit illuminates God’s Truths to that person. The Holy Spirit will also guide and sustain them through difficult times, including sickness.
A person with God’s Holy Spirit can endure pain and suffering because they know that God is in control. Nothing happens to them unless God causes or allows it to happen. They know that God has a purpose for them. So, they pray for God’s help in their pain and suffering, and they are comforted. Such a person has hope for the future.
On the other hand, a person who does not believe in God or live by the Word of God does not have such hope. They do not have the benefit of God’s Holy Spirit to sustain and guide them. So, when hardships come to them, they don’t have the strength or motivation to endure. Their spirit may break, and they may lapse into depression. They will not be able to endure their physical suffering and pain. Such a person may give up on life. How tragic.
Life is not easy. It can be difficult at times. The actor Jon Voight said during an interview that he had gone through a lot of pain and severe depression in his life. One day, In his anguish he fell to the ground in tears and said, “It is so hard.” He then clearly heard a voice say to him, “It is supposed to be hard.” At that moment Jon Voight realized that God is real, and God cared for him. He then believed in God and started down the pathway to Salvation. We can all start down that pathway. It begins with belief in God. There is no other way.
