These passages contains three Proverbs. The first Proverb says, “A fool rejects his father’s discipline, but he who regards reproof is prudent.” A father loves his children and gives them guidance on how to live and behave. In so doing, a father maintains order in his household and instructs his children so that they will become responsible adults. Children may not perceive the wisdom of their father’s guidance. However, they will obey their father because they fear his discipline. Eventually, they will perceive his wisdom.

God is our Heavenly Father, and He loves us. Like our earthly father, God guides us In living our lives. When we disobey God and wander from His guidelines He will discipline us. When we realize this, we learn to fear and obey God much like we feared and obeyed our earthly father. The Bible says, “The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.” We initially obey God because we fear His discipline. Eventually we want to obey God because we love Him. That is the embodiment of wisdom.

The second Proverb says, “Much wealth is in the House of the righteous, but trouble is in the House of the wicked.” Having wealth is one thing. Enjoying one’s wealth is quite another. Not all rich people enjoy what they have. They simply have it. The Bible indicates that when one walks rightly before God, He will give them the ability to enjoy what they possess.

The Bible says, “How blessed is the man who fears the Lord and walks in His ways. When you shall eat of the fruit of your hands, you will be happy.  It will be well with you.” It is for far better to have little and enjoy what we have, than to have more and not enjoy it.

The third Proverb says, “The lips of the wise spread knowledge, but hearts of fools not so.” A wise person is one who believes in God and lives according to God’s Word, the Bible. A fool is a person who does not believe in God and lives according to their own sinful desires.

When a wise person speaks, their words are grounded in the Word of God. Therefore, their words are beneficial to others. A wise person’s words will encourage and heal. They will also provide others with an accurate worldview to understand the events around them.  Whereas, a fool’s words are not helpful. They are self-serving and cause much damage. They also do not contain true knowledge. Therefore, it is important to understand what a person believes before we consider their words.
