This Proverb says, “When there are many words, transgression is unavoidable, but he who restrains his lips is wise.” This Proverb indicates that it is possible to talk too much when we are conversing with others. When we talk excessively, it is unlikely that we are listening to what the other person has to say. Additionally, with excessive speaking the likelihood of saying something offensive or damaging to another person increases. This Proverb indicates it is unavoidable.

Therefore, we should be good listeners and be thoughtful in the words we speak. The Bible says that we will be held accountable for the words we have spoken to others during our life here on Earth. We may have unknowingly hurt another person with our words. Whether or not we were aware of the damage caused by our words, we will still be held accountable for them.

Given this Truth, a person may think that not speaking at all would be the safe approach. However, that would also be wrong. According to the Bible, the correct approach is to listen well and let our words be few. We cannot listen well if we are we speak too much. If we listen well, we will be more likely to thoughtfully respond with words that will not cause damage.
