In this daily Bible reading is the account of Jesus feeding the multitude of people that were coming to hear Him. Jesus had gone to a desolate place away from the villages. About 5000 people went to Him to be healed of afflictions and to hear Him speak.
When it became late His disciples suggested that Jesus send the people away to get some food. However, Jesus said to His disciples, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.” His disciples said that they only had five loaves of bread and two fishes; not enough to feed the 5000 people. Jesus then performed a miracle and supplied more than enough food for them.
Jesus’ method of feeding the people was to give the food to His disciples and have His disciples give the food to the people. To me, this is a picture of Jesus giving the Word of God to His followers who then pass the Word to people who need to hear the Word. The Bible says that the Word of God nourishes us spiritually, just as food nourishes us physically.
Jesus once said to the people that ‘His body is real food and unless one eats His body, they will have no fellowship with Him.’ The people could not understand what Jesus was telling them. The Bible says that Jesus is the living Word of God. We, therefore, ‘eat’ Jesus’ body by ingesting the Word of God. The Word then nourishes us spiritually and gives us fellowship with Jesus.
