In this daily Bible reading Jesus tells His disciples the following dramatic statement: “If your hand causes you to stumble cut it off; it is better for you to enter life crippled than to having your two hands to go into Hell, into the unquenchable fire.” He made similar statements regarding feet and eyes.
I believe Jesus was saying that there are situations that will lead people to give themselves over to sin. These situations will lead people to spend an eternity in Hell. For example, a person may find themselves in a career that they consider vital as they would consider their hands, feet, or eyes to be vital. This career may provide much money. However, it may keep that person in sinful situations, or it may provide temptations that the person cannot resist.
According to Jesus’ statement, this person should leave this career. He or she may not make as much money, but they will not be given over to sins that could lead them to Hell. It would be a difficult decision for this person, but it would be the right decision.
