In this daily Bible reading is the account of Jesus continuing to heal many. Wherever He went, large crowds would gather around Jesus trying to just touch Him and be healed. However, the Pharisees were telling people that Jesus was using satanic powers to cast out demons and to heal people. They were also saying that Jesus had lost his senses.
The people were not aware of who Jesus really was: the Son of God. Even Jesus’ own family was not aware of Jesus’ true character. This is amazing to me because Jesus’ mother, Mary, was personally aware of Jesus’ miraculous birth. The angel Gabriel also had spoken to Mary about Jesus eventually saving Israel.
Jesus’ response to the Pharisees’ accusation of Jesus being possessed by an evil spirit was to tell them that they were blaspheming the Holy Spirit of God. The Spirit within Jesus was the Holy Spirit of God. Jesus said that blaspheming the Holy Spirit was an unforgivable sin. All other sins could be forgiven, but a person could not be forgiven if they blasphemed the Holy Spirit. Blaspheming the Holy Spirit was and is tantamount to rejecting the Word of God. Jesus is the living Word of God. Rejecting Jesus is indeed unforgivable.
