In these passages the Pharisees were criticizing Jesus and His disciples for not strictly following the Jewish laws and traditions. Jesus was not adhering to their religion. So, Jesus said, “New wine must be put into fresh wineskins. And no one, after drinking old wine wishes for new; for he says, ‘the old is good enough.’”

One must be reborn in Spirit to have Faith in Jesus Christ. We must become “fresh wineskins” to understand the Word of God. If one is entrenched in a particular religion, they are comfortable with that religion. They do not see a need to change. It is easier for a nonreligious person than a religious person to believe in Jesus Christ.
