In this daily Bible reading Jesus tells the people, “Everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled, and he who humbles himself shall be exalted.” I realize that one of our natural tendencies is pride. We want people to think highly of us, so we brag about ourselves and our accomplishments. The Bible says that God hates pride more than any other sin. So, this is a sin that really needs our diligent efforts to avoid.

Like many sins, pride first manifests itself in our thoughts. For example, when we see a beggar or a person with less means than ourselves, we tend to elevate ourselves in our minds. We think we are better than that poor person. We must remove that thought by thinking of the poor person as one of God’s people. We must realize that God values him or her as much or perhaps more than us. If our thoughts are in control, then so too will be our actions and words.
