In these passages is the account of the Angel of the Lord appearing to Gideon who was from the tribe of Manasseh. The Lord intended to use Gideon as His instrument to defeat the Midianites who were oppressing Israel at the time.
This story makes me wonder why God chose Gideon or why he chooses any person to be his instrument. There are some clues that give insight into God’s reasons for choosing Gideon. Gideon was aware of God’s miracles in delivering Israel from Egypt. He also seemed receptive to God’s leading. Gideon readily tore down his father’s idols when Gideon was instructed to do so. He was also aware of Israel’s sacrificial system. Gideon offered a sacrifice to the Lord.
It appears that God uses those with a character that is receptive to God’s leading. God also selects those who have a knowledge of God to some degree. Using Gideon’s example, I conclude that I must strive to improve my character and grow in the knowledge of God’s Truths if I want to be useful to God.
