In this daily Bible reading is the account of Jacob deceiving his father, Isaac, into blessing Jacob instead of Jacob’s brother Esau. Jacob’s mother Rebecca had overheard Isaac instructing Esau to hunt for some game and prepare a meal for Isaac. Isaac said that he would then bless Esau before Isaac died.

Isaac was quite old at the time. He was about 130 years old and had become blind. When Esau left to hunt for game, Rebecca prepared a meal from the livestock. She instructed Jacob to put on Esau’s clothing. Then, she put some animal skins on Jacob’s hands so he would be hairy like Esau.

Jacob took the meal to Isaac and deceived Isaac into thinking he was Esau. Isaac ate the meal and then blessed Jacob instead of Esau. So, Jacob received his father’s blessing by deceiving him.

Later Jacob would be deceived into marrying a girl that he did not want to marry. I believe that the sins we commit during our lives will return to us in like manner. As the saying goes, ‘what goes around comes around.’ The Bible says that whatever you sow you shall also reap. That is something worth contemplating before committing a sin.
