In this daily Bible reading Moses tells to the people that God was not giving the land to Israel because of their righteousness. Rather, God was fulfilling a promise to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. God was going to destroy the inhabitants of the land because of their wickedness. It was not because of Israel’s righteousness.
Moses reminded the people how they had angered God by making a golden calf to worship. They had done this while Moses was on Mount Sinai for 40 days getting the 10 Commandments. God intended to destroy Israel for their terrible act of turning away from God, who had led them out of bondage in Egypt. However, Moses intervened for the people, and God’s wrath was subdued.
Moses then told the people: “Fear the Lord God and walk in all His ways and love Him and to serve the Lord with all your heart with all your soul and to keep the Lord’s commandments and His statutes.” That is still the formula for a successful life and for gaining entry into Heaven after we die.
