In this daily Bible reading Moses continues to summarize Israel’s Exodus journey from Egypt. Moses also told them how God orchestrated and enabled them to defeat the Amorites and take their land on the east side of the Jordan River. Israel had destroyed all the men, women, and children but kept the livestock. God wanted this total destruction so that the indigenous population would not corrupt Israel. Israel then occupied their cities.
God demonstrated how He would fight for Israel and grant them the same success when they entered the promised land. God was instilling a confidence in Him so that the people would trust Him and not fear the indigenous population. However, God did want the people to have a healthy fear of Him. He still does today.
The Bible says, “The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.” This healthy fear motivates obedience to God, obedience that is necessary to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. We must therefore trust and obey Him and live according to His Word.
