In these passages, Moses tells the people that when they enter and occupy the land, they are to be careful to obey the Lord and reject the gods of the nations they dispossess. In fact, they are to destroy all their articles worship so that they do not become a snare for Israel and turn them away from God. God’s blessings for Israel would be contingent on Israel’s remaining faithful and obedient to God.

The same is true for us today. God’s blessings in our lives are contingent on our being faithful and obeying the Word of God. There are many temptations and snares in the world to turn people away from serving God and being obedient to Him.

We are free to either obey God or turn away. However, if we turn away to seek the momentary sinful pleasures of the world, God’s blessings will be removed from us.  Then we will have only ourselves to blame.
