This Proverb says, “A harlot is a deep pit, and an adulterous woman is a narrow well. Surely she lurks as a robber and increases the faithless among men.” In this Proverb, King Solomon is warning his son of one of the main pitfalls for mankind. This pitfall is having sex outside of one’s marriage. It is committing adultery. The sexual drive in humans is strong, especially in young men. Therefore, men can be tempted to have sex with women who are not their wives.

One of God’s 10 Commandments is, “Do not commit adultery.” Committing adultery is a significant sin. It is one of the most difficult sins for men to avoid. And it has destructive consequences. Committing adultery can lead to the destruction of two marriages and two homes. We men must avoid this sin at all costs.

Avoiding the sin of adultery is only possible if one avoids occasions that may lead to committing adultery. Married men should avoid being alone with a woman who is not their spouse.

Billy Graham, the great evangelist, had such a policy. He always refused to be alone with a woman who wasn’t his wife. He knew that even he, who was close to God, could be tempted to sin. It would be wise for all married men to have such a policy. One never knows when the temptation might become too great to resist.
