In these passages the writer indicates the importance of knowing the entire Word of God rather than just a passage here and there. He says, “The sum of Thy Word is Truth, and every one of Thy righteous ordinances is everlasting.”
It is vitally important to know the entire Bible rather than just isolated passages. Otherwise, we will not be able to really understand what we read. The Bible has been distorted by some religious organizations that have based their doctrines on portions of the Bible.
For example, the doctrine of ‘assurance of salvation’ is based on a few passages that say we can know we have Eternal Life. This doctrine implies that a one-time profession of faith in Jesus will guarantee our Salvation. Further, they teach nothing we can do or say after this profession will take our Salvation away. However, other passages say we must endure to the end to be saved and that we must work out our Salvation with fear and trembling.
The ‘assurance doctrine’ is also based on a dictionary definition of Eternal Life. The Bible defines Eternal Life as knowing God and knowing Jesus. We cannot know Jesus by just proclaiming our belief in Him. We must study God’s Word to know Him and live our lives according to God’s Word. Then, we will come to know Jesus. Then, we will have Eternal Life. However, we must persevere in our belief until we die to gain Salvation.
