In this Psalm the writer, Solomon, speaks of the blessing of having children. He writes, “Behold children are a gift of the Lord. The fruit of the womb is a reward, like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth. How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them.”
As this Psalm indicates, it is a blessing to have children. More specifically, it is a blessing to have children early rather than waiting until later in life. Science shows that women are more likely to have healthy babies if they have them in their early 20s rather than wait until their late 30s or 40s. For example, ‘Downs Syndrome’ occurs more frequently with females that delay childbearing until they are in their 40s.
Secondly, having children early will result in having adult children when we grow old and may need care ourselves. Having adult children when we are old will provide us a better support network when we need it.
