In these passages is the account of Saul again pursuing David with about 3000 men. During this pursuit it just happened that Saul went into a cave where David and David’s men were staying, and Saul took a nap. David’s men urged David to kill Saul. David did not kill Saul, but he cut off the edge of Saul’s robe. After David had done this, “David’s conscience bothered him.”
I believe that when we are aligned with God, God guides us. One of the methods he uses is our conscience. When we have done or said something wrong or are contemplating wrongdoing our conscience will bother us, guiding us to do or say what is right.
We must follow our conscience if and only if it is in accordance with the Word of God. The enemy also speaks to us, urging us to do or say what is wrong. Therefore, it is essential that we know God’s Word. Only then will we be able to discern between good and bad, right and wrong.
