In this daily Bible reading John speaks about Eternal Life and says the following: “God has given us Eternal Life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has the life. He who does not have the Son of God does not have the Life.” Many think that Eternal Life and Salvation are the same during one’s life here on Earth. They are not the same. The Bible defines Eternal Life as ‘knowing God and Jesus Christ.’ By this definition, a person can have Eternal Life during their lifetime. Salvation means that a person has been saved from going to Hell and is granted entry into Heaven. Therefore, a person must have Eternal Life when they die to gain Salvation.
During a person’s life here on Earth it Is possible to depart from belief in Jesus Christ. We have free will to choose our path in life. If we stop believing in Jesus, we will no longer know Jesus. Therefore, we will no longer have Eternal Life as the Bible defines Eternal Life.
Many are confused by the word ‘eternal’ because the dictionary defines eternal as forever. However, in this case, eternal is not so defined. Therefore, we need to rely on the Bible’s definition of Eternal Life if we want to go to Heaven.
