In this daily Bible reading Paul speaks of wickedness within the church. This wickedness was manifest in people who did not behave as believers but were still allowed to be part of the church. Paul told the Corinthian church to remove these people from their church and not associate with them. Such people corrupt the church, much like a rotten apple causing other apples to rot.

Paul further said that we cannot avoid association with people that are outside the church, such as our neighbors. However, we can remove  contamination from within the church. We are to judge the people within the church. Paul said, “Those who are outside, God judges.”

The Bible says that we are influenced by the people in our lives to do either good or to do bad. Therefore, it is very important that we choose our friends carefully. We cannot choose our family, but we can choose our friends.

Some of our family members may not believe in Jesus and may reject God altogether. I have a brother who states that he does not believe in God. I fear for his soul and pray for him, but I do not listen to his counsel or philosophy.

Jesus said that ‘He did not come to bring peace to the world, rather division.’ He said there will indeed be division in this world over Him. He also said there will be division in families over Him. So, we must sometimes choose between family or Jesus. In choosing Jesus we may alienate ourselves from family members. However difficult, that is the right thing to do.
